<image:title>Vision - Authentic, knowledgeable, trustworthy & thorough.</image:title>
<image:caption>These are the qualities I strive to demonstrate on a daily basis as I work with students and families. O’Hara College Counseling was started with the idea that young people benefit from working with a professional counselor that embodies these characteristics as they embark on their college search. We are not a consulting firm and I am not a college coach. Rather, as a counselor, I take a developmental approach to college counseling and believe that all students can and should grow through this process. I believe a successful college process requires self-reflection, and putting the student in the driver’s seat. We do not write essays or do work for the student - nor should parents. You only grow from an experience by going through it, not avoiding it. I do not believe that the college process is a prize to be won or game to be played. This is a major milestone in a young person’s life that should be approached with perspective and support. The process does not have to be anxiety-inducing or all-encompassing. With the right help it can be a manageable and exciting experience in a young person’s life. — Jim O’Hara Founder</image:caption>

<image:title>Counseling vs. Consulting - Consulting is not Counseling</image:title>
<image:caption>It’s important to be an informed consumer when you are looking for someone to work with on your college applications. O’Hara College Counseling was started to provide quality college counseling to families and students. COUNSELORS that are certified by their State Education Department have to meet various criteria in order to remain in good standing. A master’s degree in Counseling/School Counseling, internship experiences, background checks, fingerprinting, and professional development are required. Counselors are skilled listeners, understand developmental needs of adolescents, and trained in crisis intervention. As members of professional organizations like NACAC and ASCA, we adhere to clear ethical practices. On the other hand, anyone can call themselves a CONSULTANT. These individuals may call themselves “college admission consultants” or “college coaches.” Their experience working with young people and education/training can vary widely. There are some very effective and well-meaning college consultants, but as we saw with the Varsity Blues Scandal, there is a slippery slope. Do your homework. O’Hara College Counseling will never offer guarantees or engage in unethical behavior.</image:caption>
